Memphis Grizzlies (41 - 29) – Wednesday,
March 29, 2006, 7:30PM EST – Continental Airlines Arena
Ominous Signs Of Things To Come?
Oh Oh.
Memphis is in town. You remember, that team that somehow seems to tear
into the Nets with all its teeth and gnaw on them mercilessly every time
they meet? The Nets have lost 5 straight games over the last 3 seasons,
in case you're interested, with the Nets last beating the Griz at home
back in 2003. The Griz are red hot, winning 7 straight behind Pau Gasol
and mates, but the ominous signs are everywhere. Gasol was the Western
Conference Player of the week for the second time this month, as he averaged
a double-double -- 26.8 points and 10.8 rebounds -- while shooting 61
percent and recording 4.5 assists and 2.8 blocks to lead the Grizzlies
to a 4-0 week. It was Gasol's 29th double-double of the season, which
ranks him 10th in the NBA in that category.
The last time these two teams met, it was just after their 10 game winning
tear, when the bottom dropped out and the Nets went from success to suckers
in about two days. They went south, played the Spurs straight up but lost,
and then the wheels came off, with the Griz being the first of a brutal
back-to-back (with Dallas being the second beating in two nights that
lost weekend).
The Nets, though, are now gunning for 10 in a row once again, and face
the Griz after having disemboweled the Suns running game with some maniacal
defense. But unlike last time, when the Nets fattened up on some of the
weaker NBA teams, this time it's been legit - wins against the Lakers,
Mavs, Wiz, Pistons and those Suns are part of the streak. Will the Griz
be the breaking point of a long win streak? Or will the Nets continue
their mysteriously outrageous play with another win against a Top 10 team?

The Story From Memphis:
Talk about a hot start - An emergency alert flashed
across the scoreboard at 2:59 p.m. telling fans to evacuate Sunday's game
at the FedExForum, just as the Griz were about to tip off with the Charlotte
Bobcats.
"At first people thought it was a joke," said Grizzlies fan Charlett Golden
of Memphis. "Then everybody was cool and calm and left the building."
Fire alarms were triggered by a small fire that occurred on a food preparation
cart in a freight elevator on the terrace level. Both teams were escorted
to buses in the loading dock area, where they waited for a rescheduled
4:30 p.m. tipoff.
Pain Game: PG Damon
Stoudamire (knee surgery) is out for the season.
