Jason Collins – C
Known For: Intelligence on and off the court, rebounding, positioning, defense.

The Real Deal: Had a surprisingly good rookie season, learning how to play in the NBA quickly, and by season's end was holding his own with Shaq. Has the skills to be an effective front-line player and will be expected to take his turn spelling both Dekembe Mutombo and Kenyon Martin.

Joe's Take: And to think that I thought Jason Collins would be last year's whipping boy. He was awful in the Summer League, leading Joe to believe he would be riding the pine if not riding out of town on the cut list. He certainly came a long way in a relatively short period of time, and once again is getting rave reviews in training camp after working hard on his offensive moves in the off-season. Collins has the smarts and positioning to play all three front line slots, but at 7 feet his future probably lies at the center position. What a find for Rod Thorn.

Champagne's Take: The news is that Collins arrived at camp slimmer and stronger, and that he's working on his game as a 4. Will Collins become the Nets' "Double Threat"? If he advances on the same curve as he did last year, there's no doubt. I'm not altogether sure there is a lot more upside to his abilities, but you can't knock his eagerness to learn and his taste for challenges – he won his bigger, broader role on this year's team due to his showing against Shaq in the finals (admittedly, only the best of three weak performances). Mutombo likes what he sees in him too.
