#34 Aaron Williams |
Aaron
Williams C/F Known For: Toughness, playing bigger than he is, fierce determination, ability to hit clutch shots, quiet demeanor. The Real Deal: The first signing by Rod Thorn remains one of his best. Williams, despite some tendinitis in the knee, has played in every game for the last two seasons. His minutes were down significantly last season due to the additions of Todd MacCulloch and Jason Collins. Good defender, but usually overmatched against the bigger centers in the NBA. Has a surprisingly effective short range jump shot. Joe's Take: A perennial Joe fave, Williams plays with the kind of toughness and reckless abandon necessary to win in the NBA. With the additions of Mutombo and Rogers and the development of Collins, it will be interesting to see how Coach Byron Scott uses Williams in the rotation. Perhaps this is the year he plays more forward than undersized center? Champagne's Take: And they're calling Kerry Kittles "the forgotten man"...does anybody else on the Nets get less press? If the anonymous A-Train played football, he'd be an offensive lineman. Got a hole? Williams will plug it. He had the thankless task of backing up Todd MacCulloch for long stretches of games whenever the Amiable Canadian would fail to produce, and a good chunk of the whole season when Trodd's Winnipego-sized feet went bad. Aaron was there when the Nets needed him in their war against the Pacers in Round 1 of the playoffs, but one of my favorite parts of his game, his awkward-looking yet uncannily accurate short-range jumper, abandoned him in the NBA Finals. Another part, the "being a center" part, was utterly crushed by Shaquille. Cups his groin and throws a pick like a Brahman bull. That never left him. And when Dikembe or Collins pulls up lame this year, he'll be there.
