Dallas
Mavericks (45 - 14) - Tuesday, March 4, 2003, 8:30pm EST - American Airlines
Center Chumps in Chalupaville? Into Dallas comes Byron's bunch doing the Texas Two-Step, facing the Mavs and then the Spurs (before getting a not-so-much-easier game against the Rockets), reeling all the while with 4 losses in their last 5 games. There's more: Mr. Christopher Childs will not be joining our boys for this trip...or likely, any other trip. Amidst the Scott/Kidd mini-flap (which was stonewalled by everybody), it looks like the Nets are looking to cut Childs free (see today's papers). The Mavs, well, they might be the best team in the NBA (they certainly are record-wise) and not exactly the best group for Byron's bunch to be facing right now. Scott's on the hot seat for his team's faltering play, and without coming up with a big win out here in Texas, he could be facing life after the Nets (rumor mills are grinding). Will Nowitzki, Finley, Nash and company fire up the barbeque and roast the Nets (and Scott's chances of sticking around for the playoffs) Texas-style? Or can Scott get the Nets high-steppin' across the court for a much-needed win? See You in Hell, Dolans: Cablevision subscribers: you're missing another great game heck, a week of game, in perhaps the Nets toughest stretch of the season because of a cable company that doesn't care what you want to watch. The number will rise to 48 games lost to the Cablevision/YES mess. Well, Dallas has gotten better in that area, according to Steve Nash in a quote from David Aldridge's column (ESPN.com). "Consistency is still an issue, overall proficiency is still an issue. But overall, we're getting better." As the season goes on, Dallas is playing more combinations of man and zone, which may be the best formula for the lead-footed Mavs. "Man and zone are becoming quite similar, an amalgamation of one another," says Nash. "Sacramento does it. We're learning that yeah, we've got to be better man to man, but you don't have to play pure old school man to man to win a championship. Sacramento does a great job of hedging their betsÖL.A. plays as pure a man to man as there is, but Shaq doesn't come out on a screen and roll. So what is that?" Aldridge then comments on Nash: "I love a guy that can throw "amalgamation" around without blinking." Pain Game: Tariq Abdul-Wahad , F-G (knee, Popeye Jones, F (ankle), and Antoine Rigaudeau, G (back) are on injured reserve. Controversy: Minor ones, at best, involving referees. Guard Nick Van Exel was fined $20,000 Feb. 24 for verbally abusing officials. Van Exel's outburst came at the end of the Mavericks' 106-101 win over the Wizards on Feb. 23, according to Stu Jackson, NBA senior vice president of basketball operations. Jackson did not provide details of what Van Exel said. And, Dallas forward Eduardo Najera was suspended for one game by the NBA for bumping a referee during the Mavericks' loss to Orlando on February 25.
