Orleans Hornets (24 - 22) - Friday, January 31, 2003, 7:30pm EST - Continental
Airlines Arena Voodoo Chillin' No sir, somethin' ain't right with this at all. The New Orleans (no longer Charlotte) Hornets come to town with some sort of strange voodoo funkin' them up. Baron Davis, star point guard in the making (who Kidd put him to shame in last year's playoffs), is down with a knee injury after having back problems all season long. Jamal Mashburn, always underappreciated (and I'll add overrated), makes the All-Star team. The Hornets, expected to be at the top of the Central Division, are moving like the Big Easy s-l-o-w-l-y down into the gutter, with 11 losses in their last 17 games since the day after Christmas. So what's the damned deal with these vampires? Has the famed New Orleans nightlife sucked them in? Will the Hornets fly in here in the dead of night, stick a curse on the Nets and steal away with the bones of a win? Or can the Nets drive a stake through the heart of the Hornets with solid defensive play? See You in Hell, Dolans: Attention Cablevision subscribers: the season is in free fall. You are about to miss game number 36 to the Cablevision/YES mess. Do something about this - Click here. - Joe New Orleans Hornets Cheat Sheet The Story From N'awlins: How tired are the Hornets of the way they've been playing? According to Jimmy Smith (N.O. Times-Picayune), Courney Alexander had this to say after their blowout win against Toronto on Wednesday: "I'm hoping everybody's kind of tired of the slump we've been in. I think they are. From top to bottom, I think everybody contributed tonight. We've just got to carry it over into Friday night (at New Jersey)." Recently signed point guard Robert Pack (a New Orleans native), taking Baron Davis' place in the lineup, had this to say about his talent, according to Smith: "When you're at home watching television no disrespect to the other guys but you just know you can do as good a job as the next guy." Is this the same Robert Pack who came through New Jersey and made Dennis Hopson look good? And how come this guy didn't have a job in the NBA until the Hornets were desperate (and Pack was working out at Tulane)? Pain Game: Elden Campbell, C, (neck) is questionable. Baron Davis, G (knee), Bryce Drew, G (inflamed left foot) and Kirk Haston, F (back) are on injured reserve. Controversy: None, other than the minor scandal of George Shinn dragging his team out of Charlotte when the city wouldn't build him a new arena. It was probably really just Shinn the Charlotte citizens hated, as there is talk of putting an NBA expansion team back in the city which would play in a new arena.
