Celtics (37 - 27) - Thursday, March 13, 2003, 7:30pm EST - Continental Airlines
Arena Gang Green They come to town so close to the St. Patty's day holiday that you wonder if a drunken riot will break out. Those mouthy, overachieving Celtics are next on the Nets' surgical schedule, and while the Nets have been "funking," the Celts have been surging, finding themselves only two games behind in the Atlantic Division race after beating the Hornets last night. They're doing it with the usual doses of Paul Pierce and Antoine Walker, and a rookie point guard named JR Bremer, who's been so impressive the Celts traded away Shammond Williams to assure him more playing time. Vin Baker has been a bust, and they're not a team full of superstars, so it's the role players that have been carrying much of the load something the Nets have lacked of late. Will the hated Celts rumble their way to a pre-holiday bashing of the Nets? Or can the Nets put up their dukes and wipe out the Celtics before St. Patrick's day, liked they wiped them out at Christmas? See You in Hell, Dolans: The number of games lost to the Cablevision/YES mess increases stays at 50, as this game will be broadcast on TNT. Do something about it anyway: Click here. - Joe Boston Celtics Cheat Sheet The Story from Boston: According to Peter May (Boston Globe), Celtic Coach Jim O'Brien issued this challenge to his team after practice on March 10: "We have 19 games left. If we go 14-5, that gets us to 50 wins and we win the conference championship." O'Brien went on to add that mental toughness is what matters at this point of the season, and with a stretch of eight straight games against probable playoff teams, "There are no excuses. We do not feel like we should back down from anybody. I think our guys realize that this is the time to enjoy the difficult schedule. It's good that we're playing New Orleans, New Jersey, Detroit, because those are the teams you have to beat.'' Well said, Jim now, go out and do it. Pain Game: Mark Bryant, F, (knee) is on injured reserve. Controversy: Notoriously overpaid, underachieving Celtic Vin Baker was suspended on February 27 by the team to "address personal issues," reportedly for alcohol-related problems. The Boston Herald reported on March 5 that the Celtics and Vin Baker are going to have to rework their agreement that stated Baker was suspended without pay until he completed a rehab program for alcoholism. The agreement did state that Baker would get back some of his money if he successfully completed the program. Alcohol is not a banned substance according to the collective bargaining agreement. Celtic sources have denied the team will seek a buyout of Baker's contract. Noxious fumes apparently resulting from a prank with pepper spray disrupted the game between Boston and the Clippers on March 7 and forced the Celtics to bolt from their bench, gagging and coughing. The game was resumed after a nine-minute delay, and the Celtics won 83-72. No one sought medical attention at the FleetCenter's emergency medical station.
