Golden State Warriors (18 - 23) - Thursday, January 23, 2003, 10:00pm EST - The Arena In Oakland
Brat Ballers
Doesn't it seem like forever since the Warriors had a team worthy of anyone's respect? I admit I had to look it up, but the Warriors haven't made the playoffs since the '93 - '94 season (back when Don Nelson was coach, and Latrell Sprewell and Chris Webber were his best players) and have tried numerous times to rebuild. Well, maybe, finally, they might be on to something. The Warriors have a rookie coach, Eric Musselman, and three super sophmores, Jason Richardson, Troy Murphy and Gilbert Arenas, to complement their best player, Antawn Jamison. Add to that mix first round pick Mike Dunleavy Jr. and rookie Jiri Welsch and you've got 5 youngsters still learning how to win in the NBA. Yes, youth is starting to pay off – witness their defeat of the (once) mighty Lakers just last night. The Warriors started off 1 - 6 but are 16 - 17 since, and are only 4 wins away from matching their total of last season. The Nets may catch a break, however, because the Warriors' game last night was away.

Will the Warriors Brat Pack the sore, emotionally exhausted Nets and run off laughing with a win?

Can the Nets' get past those two hard losses that opened their trip to spank these California pipsqueaks? Netsfans don't want to hear any more whining.

See You in Hell, Dolans:
Cablevision subscribers: You catch yet another break tonight due to the success of the Nets. Tonight, along with tomorrow night's game, is nationally televised (TNT tonight, ESPN2 tomorrow night). No matter – you've still lost 33 games due to the Cablevision/YES mess. Do something about this - Click here.

Golden State Warriors Cheat Sheet
The Story From Oakland: Wonder boy Earl Boykins (who was briefly a Net in the lock-out shortened '98 - '99 season) has seen more and more playing time (22 minutes per game and scoring 10.7 points per game) for the Warriors and has been surprisingly effective despite his small stature. Here's Kevin Garnett's take: "He knows when to be aggressive, when not to be aggressive, running the team, keeping egos in check. It's not an easy thing to do especially when you're 4-11, or however tall he is." He's 5' 5".

Was the pick of Mike Dunleavy Jr. as the Warriors first round pick (#3 overall) a mistake? Vittorio Tafur (Oakland Tribune) has this quote from Warriors GM Gary St. Jean: "Our outlook on him hasn't changed one bit. Even though the minutes haven't been there for him, we still see the potential there. He's going to get stronger. As he does, things will fall into place for him."

Pain Game: No Warrior is currently on Injured Reserve. Troy Murphy, F is listed as questionable with a thigh injury. Which means he will almost definitely play, in NBA-speak.

Controversy: Aside from F Danny Fortson not playing due to the growth of F Murphy, there's really no story here. Not sure that there has been since the days of P.J. and Spree...at least, nobody is paying much attention.
