Netsfan's All-Punk
Weekend
The festivities continue...
All-Unsung
These are the guys who turn foundering NBA teams into sea-worthy
winners. They shut up and do all the things that the "superstars" making
$80 million refuse to do. The oarsmen in the galley.
First
Team
Coach - Jerry Sloan (Jazz) - Just
keeps winning. Ignored for Coach of the Year again and again. Owns the
blueprint for staffing teams with Unsungers around Superstars, in his
case Stockton and Malone. Even these two perennial Superstars have something
of an unsung tinge about them. That's what can happen when you're ring-less.
Assistant - Nate McMillan (Sonics) - Graduated
from unsung player to unsung coach. Got a major handful to deal with in
Seattle, and not doing a bad job at all.
Guard - Aaron McKie (Sixers)
- Can play everything but center. Nets handed him a break-out game this
season, where he just seemed to hit everything he put up.
Guard - Bonzi Wells (Blazers) - Might not
be on the list much longer, the way he's playing. Steve Smith, indisputably
"sung," knows it, and has been sacrificing his own playing time so Bonzi
can get off.
Forward - Bryon Russell (Jazz) - Does everything
well, but forced into the background by King Karl Malone. Will forever
be the guy on the Unsung Poster: Michael Jordan taking his Last Shot.
There in the background is Byron "Did he slip or was he pushed?" Russell,
Assigned to Guard Greatness, at the pinnacle of Unsung Anti-Glory.
Forward - Peja Stojakovic (Kings) - Has blossomed
this year. Probably won't be on next year's list. Deadly three-point thrower.
Top of the European Unsung Underclass.
Center - David Robinson (Spurs) - Yes, he's
a former All Star past his prime. But with all eyes on Tim Duncan, look
what he quietly accomplishes.
Second
Team
Guard - Eric Snow (Sixers) - Another
reason the Sixers played so well, until his injury. What East Coast team
can beat them when he gets back?
Guard - Darrell Armstrong (Magic) - He's
no longer the best player on the team, but still might be the most valuable.
Forward - Reuben Patterson (Sonics) - Wasn't
even starting until recently. Coming on strong. For withstanding a Gary
Payton outburst, should get a Gold Star.
Forward - George Lynch (Sixers) - Can defend
or shoot.
Center - Aaron Williams (Nets) - Out of position,
but who knew he was this good? Would be even better if he could play less
minutes. The return of Jamie Feick should shore up his game.
