Diatribe
#4 - December 17, 2000 The Luck of Joe Joe was born to be a Netsfan. At least, he's about as lucky as the franchise. As Champagne already told you, Joe works for Consolidated Home Decorating, a global company engaged in the manufacture of colored liquid in cans. And he's been working on a major project for the last year or so, taking him to various parts of the country and keeping him busy. So, Joe took the family to grandma and grandpa's for the weekend, and missed the Nets break the 9 game losing streak, without Marbury but with Champagne's other favorite player, against the Suns. Damn, that hurt, because I watched all 9 games from beginning to end. Joe wondered, "Is it me?" The Nets' next game was against Dallas - Joe watched at home, Nets get blown out in their worst game of the year, with plenty of empty seats at the arena. Ten games in a row for Joe, without actually seeing a win. Crushed, Joe is scheduled to see the T-Wolves with Champagne, with Marbury back in the lineup, sensing a win. But Joe must go to Chicago on business and must opt out of Marbury/Garnett love-fest. Now, Chicago is about Joe's favorite city, for a myriad of reasons. One of Joe's best friends lives out there. But, Joe's never been there in winter. You know what's coming, don't you? The Nets beat the T-Wolves handily while Joe is en route to Chicago, where it is below zero. Marbury has the highlight dunk of the year that I can only see in ESPN. Damn. Joe attends to business, it starts snowing, and Joe gets stuck in traffic while trying to make his flight back to NJ. After 3 hours in the car, and getting within five miles of O'Hare airport, Joe's flight (the last flight out) leaves without him and Joe must bunk down for another night. Joe needs to see a win, and catch a break. Maybe I need to consult my horoscope before making any trips, or watching any more games. Then again, maybe my luck is starting to change, if ever so slowly. Kevin Ollie was cut yesterday, hopefully confirming that Coach Scott realizes he wasn't one tenth the player that Sherman Douglas is. And the Nets signed another center, Vladimir Stepania, making four true centers (McIlvaine, Eschmeyer, Samake, and now Stepania) plus Aaron Williams, who is essentially playing out of position. Will the madness continue? Will Joe continue to see the Nets lose? Is Joe the issue (the curse of Joe?)? The only good thing to come from the Chicago trip was some good wine. I think Joe needs to starting drinking more. The luck of Joe, after all, resembles the luck of the Nets. We were made for one another.
